Weight training builds muscle and -even more-  gives you stronger muscles. To have well-developed muscles brings you a shopping list of positive results. I will mention some below.


-Weight training makes you physically stronger, you can use this extra strength to improve your performance in your other sport. Football and rugby players set up a better sprint once they have developed their leg muscles with weight training.
-Weight training improves the strength of injured muscles and joints. Low back pain complaints, which are not due to a hernia, can get a lot less severe through weight training.
-Building muscle makes it easier to lose weight in a healthy way. Each kilogram of muscle weight that you build up with weight training, increases the amount of calories you daily burn. More and more scientists believe that a slim body with little fat starts at building strong muscles.
-Weight training is an investment in your health. With people who do not take part in sports, their muscle tissue, strength and bone mass already starts to decrease after the age of 30. The best way to slow down that process, or even reverse it, is to start weight training.
-Weight training is simply fun and a good workout gives you energy. People who workout in a gym usually leave the gym more energetic than they came. Doctors nowadays think they might use weight training as a means to improve the life of people who suffer from chronic fatigue.
-The result of training with weights is a muscular and well proportioned body. Many people find such a body beautiful.

The last two positive effects were the reasons I started weight training about 30 years ago. I have never stopped, although my motives shifted. Over the years I've trained because I wanted to overcome injuries, because I wanted to build strength for another sport, because I wanted to remain a healthy weight and because I want to make sure I stay healthy. One thing never changed over all these years; I still take as much pleasure from weight training as on the day I started.
